Natalia Harmon is a young indie-folk artist that I discovered recently. Her sound is similar to Regina Spektor and Florence & The Machine but with her own special twist. Her lyrics are deep and full of raw emotion. She is timid and has captivating but innocent eyes. She also draws and paints when not writing music. Keep and eye out for this new artist!

How did you lean how to play guitar and write songs?

I am a self taught musician and started playing several common chords as a base for getting familiar with the guitar. I was always horrible at doing covers, so I just started placing my fingers on any guitar strings that would droll out a nice sound, in this way I truly found a way to deliver a successful echo of my emotions.

Who is your favorite musician?

My favorite musician is the Tallest Man on Earth; he has a deep and rich voice, and is completely unafraid of wailing away with his raspy, rigidity voice. He plays the blues but his music will transport you to peaceful soft meadows and streams of the countryside, putting you at ease. Another favorite artist of mine is Jana Hunter and she too has a deep folk sound accompanied with mellow lyrics and soul.

Favorite local musician?

There is a group called Not Them, who are dear friends of mine that live in Orlando, they completely inspire me. They have a hip-hop sound to them and take the written word to a whole different level, they are an inspiration and will make you want to stand up and spit words at a Slam.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The only thing that I truly want for my future is to share my creativity to friends and strangers, giving them something to relate to and hopefully a positive outlook on the lives that they lead. I sing the blues, but I would like to share the beauty of the things I see and learn from. It would be awesome to dream that I get big and reach people outside of Brevard County and maybe that can be attainable through more exposure.

What are 3 things that you cannot live without?

Running shoes, coffee, and peanut butter.

The Dull Blades

The Dull Blades are a two piece band located here in Brevard. They have their own style with hints of The White Stripes & The Strokes. As I write this, they are at Egghunt Recording Studio located inside of East Coast Music in Merritt Island. With an album on the way and several shows booked, I wanted give them a little shout out and spread the word about this up and coming indie band, locate right here in our hometown. Misti Blu: Who are your favorite local musicians?
ANTHONY: There are lots of awesome local acts around right now. Some of our favorites are Josh Miller, Damoin Soumi & The Minor Prophets, Natalia Harmon, Xtain Goblyn, Architects of Fear, Circuit Bender, and Le BLORR

Misti Blu: What are 3 things you cannot live without?
NICK: My guitar, playing shows, and my friends.
ANTHONY: My music collection, all my music gear, and air conditioning.

Misti Blu: When are you expecting to release a CD?
ANTHONY: We are hoping to release our debut album sometime around the end of July. We should be finished recording it by the end of June, but we will need a little time to work on the album layout and to get the CDs printed.

Misti Blu: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
NICK: Hopefully on tour, promoting our latest album.
ANTHONY: On tour, or in the studio working on our own Dark Side of the Moon.

Misti Blu: What inspired the name The Dull Blades?
ANTHONY: We had been looking for a name for a few weeks. I think it’s always the hardest part of starting a band. Well, one day I was describing our music to a good friend and I basically said, “We aren’t on the cutting edge of rock. We are more like a dull blade.” After I said that I instantly thought that The Dull Blades might work for a band name. I called up Nick to see what he thought. It kind of had a ring to it and we both liked it so we ran with it.

Misti Blu: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you “grow up?”
NICK: I wanted to be an artist, not in any particular medium, and a pro hockey player. I guess one of those things happened for me.
ANTHONY: I wanted to be a lot of things when I was a kid. I was always changing my future career. I wanted to be a paleontologist, an astronaut, an artist, a musician, and an architect. Pretty much anything that had to do with art or science.

Misti Blu: You’re a fairly new band… What advice do you have for someone who is starting a band for the first time?
NICK: Don’t start a band for any other reason than to play music and have fun doing it.
ANTHONY: My advice: practice and make sure the people you are in a band with are people you would want to hangout with outside of the band as well.
